In a cemetery in the nation of Zubrowka,[a] a young girl visits the shrine of a renowned writer, known simply as "Author", carrying a copy of his most-cherished novel: The Grand Budapest Hotel. The author begins narrating as the film explores his history, prefacing with a 1985 excerpt reading before flashing back to his 1968 stay at the once-grand, now-drab hotel.
